One of the leaders of the Crusades, Godfrey de Bouillon, believed that the cross symbolizes Jesus Christ and the city of Jerusalem.

The Jerusalem Crosses were the emblem and coat of arms of the Kingdom of Jerusalem from the 1280s.

 In the Middle ages the Jerusalem cross was given by Pope Urban II to the crusaders. And is, therefore also known as the "Crusader’s Cross".
